Kubuntu 11.10 Finally Released
Kubuntu 11.10 is here! Yay!
But first bit rants about Xubuntu and Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is good. But definetely not for me. I like the interface and the whole idea behind Unity but the other part GTK+ and Gnome underneath is the stuff that puts me off. I can't help it but i just can not stand Gnome idea of desktop environment. Gnome and all programs related to Gnome ecosystem have always felt like cheap plastic toys for me. Although thei are not bad or useless, they always feel less usable than qt/kde counterparts. This is just my opinion and that opinion comes from my needs and my style of using computer programs. So even if Gnome/Gtk+/Unity is not for me, it does not mean that someone else might find it usable or more better for them.
Xubuntu is quite the same as 11.04 but with a twist, this thing is STABLE! 11.10 release is more or less stability and patching round for Xubntu as the next version of xfce should be out in first quarter of 2012. Xubuntu is good solid and really good if you don't want bling or bloat that is in Unity/Gnome3/KDE (not that KDE is that bloated imho)
And my choise for 11.10 round is of course Kubuntu! (And for the record, 11.04 was Xubuntu round for me). Much has been done to Kubuntu and lots of it is just pure gold.
Muon is the new package manager. This is what i have been waiting since the death and demise of Adept. Muon is fast and provides all what i need from good package manager.
Kwin has improved a lot. My netbook has intel chip so xrender is what i must use but it is fast Chrome has never been this fast on this netbook, never! I can even watch 720 videos from youtube no problems! Actually Kwin feels bit faster on my hardware than Xfwm. (No i have no numbers to prove my feelings but mostly i have felt the difference in Chrome scroll smoothness and flasplayer). Firefox still feels like snail on salt patch.
Kubuntu-low-fat package is really good addition to Kubuntu. Bit too good actually. I have netbook with 2Gig ram and 2/4 intel atom so i enabled Nepomuk with no impact on speed or memory. Akonadi on the other hand is disabled but as i can't find how to get Akonadi and Google to play together i just have no usage for Akonadi.
So in the end i have to say good work Canonical and all who contributed towards this release! Meny who use Ubuntu have expressed that Unity is getting there, Xfce is Great as always and KDE just shines in 11.10 release cycle!

Tämä vain ei enää jaksa naurattaa. Eikä kyllä itkettääkkään. Edustaja Maijala mainostaa olevansa lapista ja murtheestaki sen kuuleepi! Tiedätkö mitä Maijala, Minäkin olen lapista ja sinunlaisten kaksinaamaisten muka vapaamielisten ihmisten takia lähdin sieltä pois. Ei sillä että täällä etelässä olisi asiat täydellisesti, mutta täällä on niitä oikeasti avoimelisiä enemmän.
Edustaja Niikko toisteli samaa paskaa mitä hyvänä oppilaana ja äänilevynä on koulutettu toistamaan. Niikon ja kumppaneiden argumentointia on turha kommentoida. Edes tiede yhteisö ei ole keksinyt vielä sellaista keinoa jolla näiden luupäiden idioottien päähän saataisiin viesti perille. Toisaalta mitenpä se sinne menisi kun ei edes haluta kuunnella. Jokainen Ps edustajahan tietää kaiken paremmin kuin kukaan muu. Hehän ovat kansan valittu valo pimeään (jonka tosin ovat itse ensin luoneet).
Edustaja Maijalan argumentointi ja toimittajan huomautukset toivat taas sitten senkin edestä mielenkiintoista uutta näkökulmaa tämän hetken puoluepolitiikkaan. Keskusta on nyt sitten näemmä pettänyt ihan kaikki äänestäjänsä. Tämä sinällään ei ole uusi asia mutta mielenkiintoinen silti. Ennen vaaleja keskusta antoi itsestään varovaisen tasa-arvo myönteisen kuvan, mutta nyt on näemmä sitten koko puolue kaikessa hiljaisuudessa päättänyt olla toista mieltä, tai oman tunnon asiahan se on kunhan puolueen kantaa muistetaan painotta. Koko ajan paljastuu enemmän ja enemmän tyhjiä lupauksia ja tyhjiä puheita. Koskaan ei tällainen toiminta ole ollut eduksi yhdellekkään puolueelle. Koskaan.
Ennen vaaleja lupailtii vaikka ja mitä, nyt kun niitä lupauksia pitäisi lunastaa (varsinkin moisen turpakäräjän jälkeen) mitä tekee keskusta? Ei mitään, ylläri pylläri...
Päivärinta on kyllä toimittajana mielenkiintoinen tapaus. Kun aihe on häntä kiinnostava hän todella osaa tehdä taustatyönsä ja tunkea ne haastateltaville kurkusta alas jos ei muuten mene perille. Kiitos Päivärinnalle taas kerran asiallisesta turpaan vedosta! Harva toimittaja kykenee Ps edustajille vittuilemaan tällaisella ammatti taidolla!

Nintendo 3ds vs Playstation Vita
Why? Why would you compare these two systems? Or more precisely why would you compare their hardware? Just don't, trust me :)
As we all remember the Nintendo DS vs Sony PSP war, it was interesting to say atleast! PSP was clear winner when it came to hardware. Bigger screen, analog control, wireless with proper wpa-psk support and better audio. In the end DS sold like it were oven baked bread.
The answer is easy. The game catalog. I personally bought both systems as there are nintendo exclusive series (mainly Final Fantasy series, Mario and Dragon Quest series, Professor Layton Series and Phoenix Wright series) and PSP exclusive games (Star Ocean 1&2). From previous you should see THE reason why psp was so bad flop. There were and there still is no good game catalog for psp consoles.
Both companies also made really bad attempts at digital distribution of games for their systems with bad results. Dsi ware was more like tech experiment alltough it had its moments. PSP was more mixed bag. The need for ps3 for getting the games was big hurdle and there is very few to choose from plus the best ones are actually psone games.
Now fast forward to 3ds and PS Vita.
3DS is out and just got mine. I just like it (period). There is just few real 3DS games but in the mean time there is my DS game collection i can play. 3DS also gives constant stream of video content to watch, virtual console keeps getting games and 3D remakes of old nes games are interesting atleast. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is beautiful! I have been playing games from the C64 times and after Final Fantasy VII there was very few games that were really fun and addicting to play. There are meny interesting games to be released before holidays.
Bottom line is 3DS has lots of promise and lots of good games hopefully!
Ps Vita is pure question mark at this point though. Release information is just 2012 TBA which is disappointing at the moment. Vita game catalog is not convincing at this point. All the info concerning Vita is mostly about its technical capabilities sigh... who cares, i want games 3DS and Vita are GAME CONSOLES (period!)
Both have some kind of internet browser. Both can play mp3/mp4 files. Audio quality in 3DS is excellent and i bet Vita had excellent quality audio output too. So in the end it's just the games. That is the reason you buy these things right?
